Ashim Choudhury is an outstanding sitar player from Bihar who was based in Calcutta at the time of my work on Growing into Music. Every Sunday he taught from morning to night—many many students including his talented son Aditya. The other six days of the week he worked in a bank 200 kilometres from Calcutta with no access to music or musical life. The integrity and refinement of his music and teaching, in these circumstances, was amazing to behold.
